I love America. I still get goosebumps when I see our flag flying. God Bless The USA still brings tears to my eyes. We have our problems. It is not because America isn't great. It is because America is a country of more than 325 million imperfect human beings being governed for more than 240 years by other imperfect human beings. I am not going to get political, because it is not about being a Republican, Democrat, Independent, Libertarian, Tea Party, or any other label. It is about being a flawed human.
I get angry when I hear protests about leadership. I fume when I see military personnel who protect our freedoms being treated with disrespect. My blood boils when the police who protect us need to fear for their lives just because they wear a badge. And, I am pushed to tears when human beings treat others poorly because they think their race, religion, country of origin, or some other aspect of their lives is superior than someone else's. 2001 America is not perfect. But I would not want to live anywhere else. This became more clear to me in the days following 9/11. I can still see the face of the California college student in the York Daily Record. She was carrying a sign that read "I am NOT proud to be an American". Our country had just experienced the most devastating terrorist event in my lifetime, and this young lady was going to "spit on our flag"?!? With my blood boiling and tears streaming down my face, I said out loud to the newspaper, "Be glad you live in this country, my dear. You have the right and privilege to peacefully carry that sign here. In many other countries, you would be put in prison or put to death." My country has always been important to me. But that defining moment stands out as my Proud To Be An American turning point. What are You Going To Do? If you are not proud to live in this amazing country, then leave. If you ARE proud to be an American, then do your part to make it even better -- peacefully and respectfully. We are a wonderfully diverse nation. God bless the USA! Comments are closed.
